Following an Oscars 2022 in which jokes about spouses were not taken lightly, cohost Amy Schumer’s bit involving nominated real-life couple Jesse Plemons and Kirsten Dunst was called into question. During the telecast, Schumer joked that Dunst was a “seat filler,” or person employed to fill seats while a celebrity is elsewhere mid-ceremony, before chatting with Plemons.

“Here’s a seat filler,” Schumer said during the bit, speaking to Dunst. “Honey, do you want to go to the bathroom?” She then sat in the nominee’s seat before striking up a conversation with Plemons: “Jesse, I love you in Power of the Dog.” Plemons replied, “You know, that was my wife, Amy.” (Dunst and Plemons, who got engaged in 2017 and share two children, have not confirmed whether they’re married.) “You’re married to that seat filler?” Schumer quipped before moving on.

Though some viewers apparently took the exchange at face value, Schumer took to her Instagram Stories on Monday to clarify that her encounter with Dunst and Plemons was scripted. “Hey I appreciate the love for Kirsten Dunst. I love her too!” she wrote, tagging the actor. “That was a choreographed bit she was in on. Wouldn’t disrespect that queen like that.”

Backlash to this joke has since been extinguished—but fallout from Will Smith slapping Chris Rock in reaction to a distasteful joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, continues. Late Monday afternoon, Smith apologized directly to Rock for his actions. “Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally,” Smith wrote in an Instagram post. “I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”

Earlier that day, the Academy announced it was beginning a review of the incident, with possible consequences for the newly minted best-actor Oscar winner. “We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct and California law,” the statement read.
